Story Chain

A growing chain of things you saw — everyone adds one more, in order.

⏱ 5 minutes 👂 Auditory memory 👥 2+ players

What you'll need

Nothing but your voices! Pick a prompt card below, or make up your own theme.

How to play

  1. Choose a prompt card, e.g. "I went to the shop and I bought..."
  2. You go first: finish the sentence with one item, e.g. "...a banana."
  3. Your child repeats your item, then adds one of their own: "...a banana and some milk."
  4. Keep taking turns, each time repeating the whole list in order before adding something new.
  5. The chain ends when someone can't remember the full list, or you've reached a fun length — either way, celebrate how far you got!
  6. Start a new chain with a different prompt card.

🎛️ Adjusting the difficulty

🟢
Make it easier: stick to one clear category (e.g. only foods), or let your child glance at a picture list while they think.
🔴
Make it harder: mix categories within the same chain, or add a rule like "each item must start with the next letter of the alphabet."
